Curriculum
Bewdley Primary School Curriculum
At Bewdley Primary School we aim to provide an enriching and stimulating curriculum that meets the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and goes on to provide opportunities to develop children’s talents in whatever field they may be.
Central to the curriculum across all subjects is the aim of equipping children with key learning skills which will enable children to organise and take responsibility for learning as they progress in school. These skills include the ability to locate, extract, interpret information and communicate it effectively. They also include children’s ability to work co-operatively and be able to organise and motivate themselves to manage their own learning.
The curriculum is organised in three ‘core subjects’; Literacy, Mathematics and Science and a range of ‘foundation subjects’ which include; History, Geography, Art and Design Technology, Music, PE (physical education), PSHE/Citizenship (Personal, Health and Social Education). In addition children in Key Stage 2 also have lessons in French.
The school has a statutory duty to provide Religious Education in line with the syllabus agreed for the Worcestershire area.
The most effective way to teach the skills and knowledge of each of these subjects is by, wherever possible, finding links between subject areas which enable the work to be covered in a topic or theme of related work. For example, a study of Guy Fawkes may include a history study of the events, art work based on fireworks, literacy through reading about Guy Fawkes, writing firework poems and writing reports of the events. This approach enables children to make sense of their learning and make it more enjoyable.
